Got a job at the deli of one of the griocery stores in town! I start Monday. I’m worried about training and sharp things and KEEPING the job, but!!! And in August, the dude in charge of the dining hall at the college told me to stop by, so!!! Job!!!

Also, the job at the deli’s pay changes depending on how hard you work, to the point where I was asked not to discuss my wages with other workers. Talk about motivation, dang!

Ahhh I want my first day to be over with. ;;; I’ll check to see my hours on Sunday.

Also, I’ll be going home tomorrow ‘til Sunday because anniversary of cousin’s death and family from out west is coming to spread my uncle’s ashes. My queue will be on, though!

I … maybe I’m being over-critical, but I’m just???? I understand wanting to talk about the character in general on a comment, but you didn’t even mention the art itself, which is what I kindof care more about? Also, I really don’t want debates about the character unfolding on a picture, thanks. Not that I get enough views to ever make that a possibility, but still.

“We praise people for being “naturally” smart, too, “naturally” athletic, and etc. But studies continue to show, as they have for some time now, that it is generally healthier to praise schoolchildren for being hardworking, than for being naturally gifted. We know now that to emphasize a child’s inherent ability places pressure on that child to continue to be accidentally talented, which is something that is hard for anyone to control. When the children who are applauded for their natural skills fail, they are shown to take the failure very personally. After all, the process of their success has always seemed mysterious and basic and inseparable from the rest of their identity, so it must be they who are failing as whole people. When students are instead complimented and rewarded for their effort and improvement, they tend to not be so hard on themselves. When they fail, they reason, “Well, I’ll work harder next time.” They learn that they are capable of success, rather than constantly automatically deserving of it, and they learn simultaneously that they are bigger and more complex than their individual successes or failures.”

I realize we’re talking beauty here, but this speaks to me because it’s something that I try to follow with my students: praise them for their hard work, rather than their natural intelligence. Some of them are very, very bright, but not everyone is going to be a “natural” genius. On the other hand, everybody can be a hard worker. It is a virtue anyone can foster and one that I want to foster.
