Is it too much to ask to have a fic with Peter Parker in it wherein he’s not terribly OOC, or that’s not written solely for the purpose of hooking him up with someone? Some honest to goodness normalfic where he’s NOT part of the superfamily in a way that destroys his backstory and thus his entire personality, or has him hooked up with an incredibly OOC Deadpool?
Because the amount of shitty fics with him in it lately is overwhelming.
(and jesus christ has anyone writing these fics even read the Deadpool comics???)
I randomly found your post through the #peter parker tag after writing up a post about how upsetting I find it when fandom stuff these days loves shitting all over Aunt May, and yeah, I definitely agree with you. When ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ came out, I was hoping the film would re-vitalize the fandom and I thought there was a lot of potential for some great fanfic exploring the characters and world of the new movie, but 90% of TASM fics seem to be along the lines of ‘Peter is adopted by the superfamily and is loved for the first time in his life and is wacky and shy as he spouts unfunny one-liners like random One Direction lyrics’.
I don’t think a lot of fans understand how while, yes, Peter would totally get along with Steve and Tony and has in the comics for obvious reasons, Aunt May and Uncle Ben made him who he was — he wouldn’t be the same person if he had been adopted by the Avengers as a baby. And Peter would NEVER throw Aunt May under a bus just because Tony is so much cooler than she is and likes science. And if he called the Avengers family, it would never be at Aunt May’s expense. Just, augh. And I’d like to see just one story where Peter has a relationship with Dr. Connors that doesn’t involve Curt being a creepy stalker of underage teens. I mean, if that floats your boat, whatever and I think people can and should write what they want (yet be prepared for criticism and disagreement), but I’d really love to see a fic that’s more in-line with the film and/or comics.
Oh god yes, I feel the same about Aunt May.
Guys, Aunt May and Uncle Ben made Peter who he is. While I can understand the cuteness of having Steve and Tony raise him as a couple, that’s not really going to be Peter Parker that they raise, just someone with the same name. Peter’s genius is his own, but much of his personality and morals, and ultimately the person he is, come from his aunt and uncle. Getting rid of Aunt May in lieu of the Avengers without explanation seems really, really bizarre. And Peter loves his relatives, would (and does, in several incarnations) give his life for his Aunt.
I really dislike seeing fics with the tags for the new movies that are, in essence, taking exactly what you said. I want fics- good fics- that explore those storylines, develop ideas on how this version of Peter could interact with the rest of the Marvel world, fics that explore the characters and their relationships and, perhaps, predict what will happen later based on the movies universe and hints from the comicverse.
Instead, all we’re really getting with Peter lately is that superfamily thing (or agonizingly OOC Wade/Peter UGH). And while I have nothing against that, you have to take everything into account, not just slap the characters into a mold and expect them to fit or work. In doing that, you warp them and make them really OOC. I was expecting the new movie to bring attention to the series again, to make more people get involved in the Spideyverse all over again, but that’s … not really happening.
As for the Curt thing, yeah. Personally I don’t ship them romantically, but I also haven’t seen a single fic where they’ve even had a friendship that wasn’t creepy as all hell.
I just want good fanfiction, dammit, not shallow, OOC garbage.

Ultimate Spider-man Masterpost (sortof)
Everyone knows the classic story of Peter Parker, the boy who is bitten by a special spider during a school field trip and gains powers as a result. This Ultimate retelling doesn’t stray far from the basic story, but reinvents events, villains, and other details, along with a slightly younger Peter Parker, in order to be interesting to new fans and old alike. While it doesn’t follow Marvel’s “mainstream” timeline, the series is definitely worth a read for its realistic writing (i.e. a teenage Peter Parker who actually acts like a teenager among other things) and the way it intertwines with other Ultimate storylines as well as a unique take on the Spider-man universe.
Some pages may be out of order in some of the volumes, because that was the way they were when I downloaded them and I haven’t had time to reorder them. But every page of every volume is still in the folder, albeit a little out of place, so please forgive me if I don’t rush to wade through 100+ volumes to search for the handful of out-of-place pages. ;;;
Also, since I basically expect downloaders to put everything in an “Ultimate Spider-man” folder, I didn’t name every folder that. Other than that, please tell me if I made mistakes, and be aware that these were all uploaded via 4Shared and thus I will need to be told when the links are out-of-date. After the destruction of the original Avengers, there was doubt that another superhero group would come together again- until a group of young teen heroes, each with a special connection to a member of the original Avengers, appears. Despite attempts by Captain America, Iron Man, and others to stop them, believing that the younger team would be in too much danger, the Young Avengers gather more members and continue. The diverse team of young heroes find their own way to deal with relationships, civil wars, alien invasions, and discovering their own connections to the previous Avengers as well as working to earn respect from the remaining members.
