I know a lot of people nowadays scoff at runaways, call them “melodramatic” or “just a way to gain attention.” But there are runaways, and then there are RUNAWAYS. There are the kids who physically NEED to get out of the space they’re in, who can’t stand being around the people or place that is making their life miserable, who leave rather than harm someone else or themselves. There are some who run away to show their friends and family that things are bad and need to be changed, and unfortunately it rarely works. There are those who play at running away in order to gain attention, and those are the ones who cause the stereotype. And then there are the ones who never come back.
But I’m not really talking about runaways here. I’m talking about disappearances. These are the kids who don’t leave a note or give any warning when they leave. It could be because they want something different, it could be because they’re playing at being dangerous or meeting someone they know their parents/family won’t approve of- it could honestly be for many reasons. Or maybe it was because someone came in and told them that, unless they came with them, they’d hurt someone they care about. Or, worse, it was someone they care about who takes them away forever. Maybe they just snuck out for a minute to go to a party, or because they heard a noise outside. The point is, these people never come back.
I don’t know what the case is with the girl from my area, but I hope she’s not a disappearance. I hope that, instead of finding her body in the Connecticut, they find her somewhere alive and in one piece. We’ve had too many disasters in this area- Drega, the Arsenault shooting that killed a schoolmate of mine, the explosion of the ammunition factory, and all the other little disappearances. The bad luck has to end.
